An Eco-friendly Cleaning Guide

Cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore! It can, in fact, be therapeutic and destressing before, during or after a full-on season. And with Ecofriendly alternatives, you can be sure to ditch all the toxicity and embrace nature's best solutions.

You can make cleaning a fun competitive game for younger ones. They get to keep track of their chores and earn rewards as they complete them. Whether we have young or adult guests around, my motto is

“If you spill it, you clean it”
“If you use it, you wash it”
“When you’re done, you keep it away”

This works almost all the time, except of course with toddlers or babies, lol. I know how it is to clean up after our 10-month old.

Throughout the busy Christmas period with family and friends coming over, more cleaning is required around the house and it can quickly become a chore. Most of the major cleaning comes from a build-up in the kitchen, bathroom & living areas, but these tips can help turn cleaning from a chore into a charm:

  • Pay attention to food and oil splashes on your hob and in the oven. Clean your hob and oven after each round of cooking to prevent the stains hardening up. Frequent Cleaning of these areas means you will not need a major cleanup action on boxing day. It also helps to prevent grease from building on top of each other as each time you cook. multiple layers of grease are harder to clean and can be frustrating to cook on a dirty cooker. Try the Iron & Velvet Oven Cleaner for cleaning your oven and reduce elbow grease. The Bio-D All Purpose Sanitiser spray for surfaces includes orange oil with effective degreasing qualities to wipe through grease and stains.
  • Encourage cleaning as you go. Wipe up spills and splashes as you prepare, decorate and cook. For example, you can give the bathroom a quick spray and wipe down after you use it to reduce the soap build-up from increased usage. Also, keep an eye out for accidents around the house. You may need to appoint a "cleanliness ambassador" to keep an eye out for these little accidents.
  • Involve others around in the cleaning process. talking of keeping an eye out for accidents, this role will be great for the young ones in the house. You can even attach rewards to the cleaning when well done.
  • Use the right products! This might seem like common knowledge but time is of the essence and you want to make sure you use the right product that will give you the required result quickly. I find it quite exciting and motivating to know that many eco-friendly cleaning products (such as listed below) deliver excellent results without the nasty toxic chemicals.
